Animal Enrichment
The keepers at Newquay Zoo use a whole variety of enrichment for the animals. Helping to encourage natural feeding and foraging behaviours, stimulating activity and provoking curiosity using unusual objects and situations.
The kind of devices used include plastic bottles shaped and moulded with food inside, on hot days food can be frozen in a block of ice with a rope going through it to hang from above, rope balls, hamocks made from fire hoses, paper sacks with food inside and even papier maché zebras with meat inside for the lions.
This results in helping to keep the animals more active, physically healthier and apparently more contented.
Staff are always on the look out or inventing something new. If you have any ideas please do let us know. (Photography by Michelle Turton)
