A SHORT HISTORY OF NEWQUAY ZOO

Newquay Zoo, opened in 1969, has become one of the country's top zoos, with ground breaking and innovative conservation programmes. Winning many major awards including most recently SILVER Visitor Attraction of the Year at the South West Tourism Excellnce Awards 2007-2008,  it has proved itself to be one of the best attractions in the South West.

The zoo was run by Restormel Council unitl 1994 when if became privately owned by Mike Thomas and Roger Martin. One of the highlights during this time was the
revolutionary partnership with St. Austell College which established and developed an educational facility on land adjacent to the zoo, catering for BTEC and HND studies.

In August 2003 Newquay Zoo joined forces with Paignton Zoo and is now part of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust family, comprising Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts, Slapton Ley and two urban nature reserves.
Specialising in breeding many endangered species, Newquay Zoo is at the forefront of conservation and education, leading the way in exciting innovative enclosure design, enrichment projects and overseas conservation.

Above are three photographs from when the zoo celebrated its 35th birthday in May 2004. A time capsule was buried to be opened again at a later date and look at how things have changed. There was a fantastic cake as well. Very tasty!
