PRE-SCHOOL and PRIMARY VISITS
The zoo is a fantastic visual resource encouraging children to learn about wildlife in exciting and unusual surroundings. If you would like to add value to your visit, you could book one of our creative and interactive workshops. The majority of these workshops are linked to the National Curriculum and involve live animals and artefacts. Admission prices are outlined in the table below and workshops range from £10 to £40. Have you ever wanted to have your picture taken with a reptile or get up close and personal with a giant millipede? Well book a Newquay Zoo Animal Encounter and you can! This is a rare opportunity to meet one or more of our animals up close to learn fun facts and ask questions. Please note that we have a no touch policy, and we cannot guarantee which animals are available
Pre-school and Reception WORKSHOPS
£10 for 30 minute workshop (maximum 30 children).
Please note that some of our KS1 workshops can be adapted for pre-school and reception classes.
- MAGICAL MINIBEASTS Do you know your slugs from your snails? Learn fun facts and come face to face with the zoo's monster minibeasts.
- COLOURFUL CREATURES Discover the wonderful world of colour through the beautiful and unusual animals at the zoo.
- FEATHER, FUR AND SCALES Through pictures, animals and objects the textures of feathers, fur and scales will be explored.
Key Stage 1 WORKSHOPS
£10 for 30 minute workshop (maximum 30 children)
- HAVEN'T YOU GROWN! (Science - Unit 1A Ourselves) Through pictures and at least one live animal the way in which animals grow and their appearance changes with age will be explored. This incorporates our previous popular workshop WHO'S JOEY? (Unit 1A (5) Matching adult & baby).
- GROOVY MOVES (Science - Unit 1A Ourselves) Mimic a monkey, move like a penguin and waddle your way to the education centre to discover how animals move!
- SENSE IT! (Science - Unit 1A Ourselves) NEW! Explore the world of animal senses and discover how animals use these senses for survival through visual aids and real creatures at the zoo.
- WHAT'S THAT NOISE? (Science - Unit 1F Sound & hearing). Can you roar like a lion or hoot like an owl? Use your ears and discover exciting new animal sounds, and make lots of noise yourself!
Key Stage 1-2 WORKSHOPS
£15 for 45 minute workshop (maximum 30 children)
- ON THE BRINK (Citizenship - Unit 03 Animals & us - Yrs 1 - 6) Discover which animals are endangered and investigate why they are so rare. We use a range of live animals as part of the discussion and there is the chance to see endangered animals around the zoo. This workshop can be adapted to use animal artefacts seized by HM Customs (please advise us if this is suitable on booking).
- WHERE DO I FIT IN? (Science - Unit 2C Variation) This quizzical workshop uses photographs, artefacts and live animals to encourage the children to observe and recognise simple characteristics of animals. A discussion session explores differences and similarities between animals and looks at classification.
Key Stage 2 WORKSHOPS
£15 for 45 minute workshop (maximum 30 children)
- CRUNCH ... MUNCH ... LUNCH! (Science - Unit 3A Teeth & eating) NEW! Rip! Tear! Chew! Bite! The children meet a range of animals and explore what they eat and how they eat it! Using photographs and artefacts, we consider how animals use their teeth and what we feed them to ensure they have a well balanced diet.
- FOOD FOR THOUGHT (Science - Unit 3A Teeth & eating) Tease those taste buds and find out what's cooking at Newquay Zoo. Investigate animal diets, compare your favourite food to theirs and get involved by making a feeding device for one of our primate groups.
- THROUGH THE SPYGLASS (Science - Unit 4B Habitats) Explore a variety of habitats around the Zoo with your own explorers' pack. Maps, notes and binoculars will help you observe the animals. In the workshop the world's different habitats and the animals that live there will be discussed and you will get to meet some real animals and consider the habitat they live within.
- ROUNDABOUTS (Science - Unit 5B Lifecycles) NEW! How did that plant get there?! This workshop explores life cycles and food chains and considers how animals help with pollination and seed dispersal. We will use various visual aids and live animals as we discuss reproduction and life stages, what eats what, and how animals help with recycling.
£20 for 60 minute workshop (maximum 30 children)
- WINGS & THINGS (Science - Unit 6A Interdependence & adaptation) Discover some interesting animal adaptations using simple, yet fun experiments in this workshop which includes live animals and the chance for children to explore some animal adaptations for themselves.
£40 for a day's workshop
- MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE DAYS These hugely popular sessions have been successfully run for KS3 students for many years and we have now adapted this award winning language day for younger groups. It uses a range of techniques including a site specific workbook, signage, puppetry and animal encounters. The day encourages students to use their reading, listening and speaking skills outside the classroom in a stimulating and an unfamiliar setting. Currently available in French. Spanish available from mid 2008.
£25 for 90 minute workshop (maximum 30 children)
- MAP MANIA! (Geography - Unit 25 Geography and numbers - Yrs 5 - 6 and Citizenship - Unit 1 Section 10 Working together - Making decisions) Use a compass to follow trails around the zoo. Work together to solve clues in this exciting workshop which includes map related games involving grid refrences, symbols, countries and scales. (This workshop received a commendation for BEST FORMAL EDUCATION PROJECT at BIAZA awards 2005.
