SECONDARY, FURTHER and HIGHER EDUCATION
The zoo is a fantastic sensory resource encouraging students to learn about wildlife in exciting and unusual surroundings. If you would like to add value to your visit you could book one of our interesting and informative talks. The majority of these workshops are linked to the National Curriculum and involve live animals and artefacts. We are happy to cover other topics to suit your needs, course or exam syllabus. Details of the talks currently offered are outlined below, prices range from £15 to £40.
Have a close encounter! (designed for all ages) £10 for 30 minute workshop (maximum 30 people)
Have you ever wanted to have your picture taken with a reptile, or get up close and personal with a giant millipede? Well book a Newquay Zoo Animal Encounter and you can! This is a rare opportunity to meet one or more of our animals up close to learn fun facts and ask questions. Please note that we have a no touch policy, and we cannot guarantee which animals will be available.
Key Stage 3 WORKSHOPS
- FAMILY LIFE (Science - Unit 7b Reproduction) NEW! Explore the weird and wonderful world of animal reproduction in this light hearted workshop that focuses on the breeding behaviour of a range of animals.
- PREDATOR OR PREY? (Science - Unit 6A Interdependence & adaptation) NEW! Pounce! Cunning! Silent.... Creep...Discover how animals are adapted to survive and learn how animals hunt and hide. Identify predators and prey, see how they use skill and their senses and meet some animals up close!
- DINNER IS SERVED (Science - Unit 8a Food and digestion) NEW! Discover the table manners of some of our fascinating animals by looking at the food they eat and how they digest it.
£40 for a day's workshop
- MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE DAYS These hugely popular sessions use a range of techniques including a site specific workbook, signage, puppetry and animal encounters. The day encourages students to use their reading, listening and speaking skills outside the classroom. Currently available in French. Spanish available from mid 2008.
Key Stage 3 and 4 WORKSHOPS
- ON THE BRINK! (Citizenship - Yr 7 - 11) As well as covering the topics in the KS2 version of this, we will also explore the role of the modern zoo and how we can help endangered animals on an individual level. HM customs seizures will also be used if requested on booking.
£20 for 60 minute workshop (maximum 30 students)
- PENGUIN GENETICS (Science - Unit 9a Inheritance and selection) This session pioneered with Newquay Trevilgas and Camborne Community Colleges, is a great opportunity for students to learn and apply genetics in an interesting setting. It investigates selective breeding, studbooks, albinism and genetic diversity. This workshop received a commendation for BEST FORMAL EDUCATION PROJECT at BIAZA awards 2004.
£25 for 90 minute workshop (maximum 30 children)
- MAP MANIA (PE - Unit 25 - 27 Outdoor and adventurous activities, Geography Unit 1 Making connections, Citizenship Unit 07 S1 skills for effective teamwork)Use a compass to follow trails around the zoo. Work together to solve clues in this exciting workshop. This workshop provides an opportunity to develop teamwork, communication and problem solving skills.
Key Stage 4 WORKSHOPS

- SCIENCE IN THE WORKPLACE (GCSE Applied Science ) "Do you do lots of Science in your job?" This session covers job roles, qualifications, health and safety, business, social and economic aspects of the zoo as a local, national ands international organisation.

- MONITORING LIVING ORGANISMS (GCSE Applied Science) NEW! This presentation explores many aspects of monitoring living organisms within a zoo environment. It covers health, breeding, diet, behaviour, enclosures, plants and more to show how we successfully run the zoo to meet welfare standards and our conservation aims. Pupils are encouraged to explore the zoo to look for evidence of monitoring around the site.

Further & Higher Education
Whether you are studying for a BTEC, A Level or are a post-16 group with an interest in wildlife and conservation, the following workshops could be perfect for you.
£15 for 45 minute workshop (maximum 30 children)
- ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR So just what is normal behaviour? Dominance, social grouping, territorial behaviour, altruism, stress and mating displays are just some of the areas we will explore in this fascinating workshop. The session can be linked to animal behavioural observations onsite.
- THE ROLE OF ZOOS Conservation, research and education are a vital part of the work of any zoo. Explore the importance of different conservation strategies and their management in a modern zoo.
- ZOO ETHICS What are the values of hand-rearing? What are the welfare implications of animals in captivity? This thought provoking workshop covers many ethical questions that zoos provoke.
- LEISURE AND TOURISM The Zoo is one of the top tourist attractions in the county and whether you are studying marketing, business management or customer service it is a great case study. This workshop is flexible and can be tailored to cover topics including the marketing mix, SWOT analysis, promotion, location, customer service, the impact of tourism and much more.
