Environmental Management System
Newquay Zoo utilises an Environmental Management System as part of our continuing commitment towards sustainability. Our Environmental Policy is written within the guidelines of the International Standard ISO 14001, this means that we have not written a green wash statement. Every single point on our policy must be demonstrated within the Environmental Management System and externally audited on an annual basis. For example, point 5 of our policy says ‘‘Demonstrate efficiency in the use of energy, water and natural resources’, the auditor will then ask us how we have done this and what improvements we have made year on year.
What is ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 sets out internationally recognised requirements for an Environmental Management System which can be used by an organisation to measure and document their impact on the environment.
By being audited against these standards, organisations can look to minimise their negative effect on the environment.
What changes has the Zoo made?
Using the EMS helped us improve our overall operation a great deal.
Here are just some of the changes we implanted:
· Replacing all incandescent lighting with low energy fluorescent lighting.
· Using occupancy sensors in toilets.
· Using high frequency fluorescent fittings as opposed to standard ones.
· Improving insulation within animal houses.
· Installing sustainable energy sources (solar panelling).
This has led to a 30% saving on energy (Aug 2008). To put this into context, by the end of 2008 we had reduced our electricity consumption by 42464 kWh saving £3397.12.Our environmental management system breaks the zoo down to specific departments:

Thermal Imaging
As part of the EMS we used Thermal Imaging reporting technology to see which areas of the Zoo were energy inefficient.
Each building in the Zoo was audited, from animal enclosures to offices. The image below shows the Geoffroy's Marmoset house as an example.
From this we were able to identify that heat was generally lost through the roofs and windows of most of our enclosures. Insulation to walls and ceilings as well as double glazing has been introduced.
