Did you know that the earth receives enough energy from the sun in an hour to supply the world's energy requirement for the whole year?
In October 2009 we fitted fifty solar panels have been fitted on the Zoo's Monkey Walk to generate green electricity plus three solar thermal panels, to heat water for the Café Lemur restaurant.
The panels will generate an estimated 9,300kWh of energy each year and save over 4.5tonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the environment. A live web based monitoring system located near the Tropical House shows how much power is being generated and the carbon dioxide savings.

Funding for the project was supplied by EDF Energy and the Governments Low Carbon Building Programme – Phase 2. Project support was also provided by Community Energy Plus.
As part of the Environmental Management System energy consumption levels of electricity, gas and water are monitored and recorded at the end of each month. The installation of the solar panels has meant an average reduction in energy usage of 30%.
Many of our species are endangered due to deforestation and development pressures which contribute to climate change. It is fitting that our attempt to change the world for the better sit on the enclosures of some of the world’s most endangered species.
