Staff at Newquay Zoo in Cornwall are reaping their first harvest of crops from their unusual wartime ‘dig for victory’ allotment to feed both animals, hungry staff and visitors.
John Meek, Animal Collection Manager: “This is about as fresh as we can get for many of our animals, harvested or picked minutes before feeding. Mint and other herbs have been good smelly enrichment for some of our hunting animals like African Lions.”
Mark Norris, Education Manager: “We have some interesting chats about growing food, recycling over the garden fence to visitors of all ages, ranging from questions from school children and families on what we or they are growing to recipe suggestions and seed saving tips from older visitors who remember rationing and wartime allotments.
Perpetual spinach has proved a hit with the Macaque monkeys, Pak Choi and fresh leeks with capuchin monkeys, Lolla Rossa lettuce and Savoy Cabbage with the African Pygmy goats and carrot tops with our sheep and turkeys!
An accompanying display of wartime objects and gardening and recipe books from the 1940s on display at recent wartime weekend events at the zoo have provided the original pictures for a family trail around the zoo.
Resources have also been collected for a book and future schools workshops on wartime life and gardening, including handmade toys as part of the BBC’s History of the World in 100 Objects online museum.
A regular blog has kept many people informed of garden successes and failures or discoveries in our research, often linked to topical wartime anniversaries.
