Australian budgerigars can be found across many different habitats in Australia, including forests, savannahs, shrublands, grasslands, deserts and even urban areas. They are nomadic and travel in flocks.

Budgerigars mainly eat seeds, but they will also eat fruit, vegetables, and even insects, making them opportunistic feeders.

Interesting facts!

  • Budgerigars are one of the most popular pets in the world, after dogs and cats.
  • Their name comes from an Aboriginal language and means ‘good eating’ or ‘excellent to eat’.
  • Budgerigars are naturally green and yellow with black stripes. However, selective breeding for the pet trade has resulted in a range of colours, including blue, violet and white.
  • They can mimic human speech!

Conservation

Australian budgerigars have no major threats, and are listed as Least Concern on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
