Renewable energy
Did you know that the earth receives enough energy from the sun in an hour to supply the world's energy requirement for the whole year?

HARNESSING THE POWER OF THE SUN
Since October 2009 Newquay Zoo has had solar panels fitted on the Monkey Walk, helping to generate green energy. Solar thermal panels are also on-site, heating water for Café Lemur. The panels generate approximately 9,300kWh of energy each year, saving over 4.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the environment. A live web based monitoring system, located near the Tropical House shows how much power is being generated, as well as how much carbon dioxide is being saved.
As part of the Environmental Management System energy consumption levels of electricity, gas and water are monitored and recorded at the end of each month. The installation of the solar panels has meant an average reduction in energy usage of 30%. Many of our species are endangered due to deforestation and development pressures which contribute to climate change. It is fitting that our attempt to change the world for the better sit on the enclosures of some of the world’s most endangered species.
