Tracey: Hooftstock Keeper
If she's not in the village farm, she's out in the field mucking out the zebras. Tracey's passion for animals makes her a great fit in the keeping team!
What is the best part of your job?
EVERYTHING - seeing the animals, cleaning poo. I like cleaning poo.
What is your favourite animal?
You can’t ask me that! That’s like asking if I had kids what my favourite kid would be. Umm.. Well, Al Capone I suppose Al Capone the Tapir is one of my favourites. Tair the male warty pig is very underrated. And Spike, everyone loves Spike the goat!
If you could be any zoo animal what would you be?
A sloth, so I could sleep all day. Or a tapir so I can make loads of mess, look really cute and get away with it.
Do you have any interesting pets?
A goat! I hand reared a goat called Wiley and he lives at the college that I used to go to in Essex. At home I’ve got a lizard and a snake.
What is the most dangerous animal on your section and why?
Umm, probably the black wilderbeest , he's probably the most dangerous. But the one I’m most fearful of is the zebra, because I work in with them. They are very strong and have the ability to change how they behave quite quickly.
How did you become a zookeeper?
I started at Newquay Zoo doing 5 days work experience with the college and then one of the keepers here, Cheski, asked if I wanted to come and help volunteer and I said yes. I started by doing one day a week, then I left to finish my course at college. But then the Zoo rang me to ask if I wanted a job and I said yes how quickly can I start!
What is the best thing about working at Newquay Zoo?
Everything! Seeing the animals every day. Always coming in to work happy and being around people that have the same common interest.
