This year is a very special year for Newquay Zoo, as on May 26th it will have been 50 years since the zoo officially opened its doors back in 1969.

The early years…

Newquay Zoo began as a small petting zoo and has since evolved into a conservation research and education charity, dedicated to the protection of animals, plants and their environment, both locally and internationally.

Newquay Zoo was set up by Newquay Urban District Council who ran the zoo from 1969 until 1994. Despite a successful few years, by the early 1990s financial struggles became apparent, which many zoos were also facing during that time, this led to Mike Thomas taking ownership in 1994.

Redevelopment…

Mike Thomas along with many others helped to redevelop Newquay Zoo and make it thrive once more. This couldn’t have been done without the dedication and support from the local community, in time, money and materials.

Award winning…

During 1994 – 2003 Newquay Zoo won awards, including the National Small Business award in 1999/2000, introduced scientific research, became heavily involved in national and international breeding programmes, and established a partnership with Cornwall College for Applied Zoology – which is thought to be the first facility of its kind anywhere in Europe.

To the present day…

In 2003 Mike Thomas decided to retire and sold Newquay Zoo to the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, the charity behind Paignton Zoo Environmental Park and Living Coasts in Torquay. Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust continued the educational and ‘not for profit’ elements established and continued to be heavily involved with vital conservation projects such as Selamatkan Yaki and Save Vietnams Wildlife (find out more about these here).

Which brings us to today...
