Habitat

Mature forests and open woodland, preferring moist areas to dry.

Wild Diet

Small to medium sized mammals, frogs and large birds up to the size of a grouse.

Behaviour

Ural owls are quiet and secretive, and it is unusual to hear them calling outside of the breeding season. The males will call for a mate using a deep rhythmic sound of ‘hohoo-ho-hohohooo'. This sound resembles the noise made by a tawny owl of which the ural owl is a close relative.

Breeding

They sometimes adopt an abandoned buzzard or goshawk nest but may build their own in a tree hollow. 3-5 eggs are laid at 2 day intervals and incubated for 28-29 days.

How do I adopt an owl

First choose the adoption package you wish to purchase and then make your animal selection.

Adoptions apply to the species rather than individual animals. This is because our animals may move to other zoos as part of breeding programmes.
